Ella Maillart at the Musée Rath

Exhibition from December 7, 2023 to April 21, 2024

Through a selection of photographs, articles, books and documents, this exhibition invites visitors to rediscover Ella Maillart's exceptional career. Sportswoman, traveller, lecturer and journalist, she never ceased to defend her vision of "world unity".

Much more than a tribute, and far from nostalgic commemorations, this exhibition also aims to create new intergenerational dialogues and to consider the human being in its individual as well as collective complexity.

Anne-Julie Raccoursier and Pauline Julier, two artists with very distinct personalities, take up the challenge: avid travelers themselves, their approaches, oscillating between reality and fiction, in turn deconstruct clichés.

Photo Elysée archive

The vast majority of the objects presented in the Musée Rath exhibition come from the Ella Maillart collection, held by Photo Elysée. We are delighted to have been able to make this archive and the expertise of our collaborators available to us.

The exhibition features numerous items from Ella Maillart's cartothèque, a collection of 10,000 cards with original prints and handwritten inscriptions in 48 boxes. The cartothèque contains almost all the photographs taken and collected by Ella Maillart, and is a unique record of her life and adventures.

A veritable visual repertory of her travels and explorations, this collection served as a tool from which to draw the photographs she used to illustrate her many publications and lectures. Today, the Cartothèque is a valuable archive that enables researchers to retrace Ella Maillart's career and understand her work process.
