'Hoselupf': Swiss-German dialect for folk wrestling

Folk wrestling, also known as Alpine wrestling, is a national sport in Switzerland contested on an outdoor circular area covered with sawdust. Women were only first allowed to compete at a professional level in 1982, but men still clearly dominate the field.

Sabina Bösch followed a group of female wrestlers for an entire season and joined them at five tournaments in various parts of Switzerland. Whether photographing them in action or getting them to pose for her camera, she captures all the subtle qualities of these very determined women. The result is a documentary brimming with tenderness, reflecting the artist’s fascination with the human body.
