Antoine d’Agata talks with Nathalie Herschdorfer about his career spanning over 30 years of compulsive roaming from dusk till dawn
Born in Marseille in 1961, Antoine d’Agata left France at the age of 17. After travelling through many countries, he settled in New York in 1991 and began working with photography next to Nan Goldin and Larry Clark. He explored the twilight world of pariahs and outcasts, channelling his photography to reveal the truth, however brutal that may be. A member of Magnum Photos since 2004, Antoine d’Agata has adopted an exceptionally intimate and personal approach to his subjects.
His creative process focuses on the human body as a site where political discourse and social determinism meet and where the only escape lies in the liminal states experienced with drugs, sex, and close encounters with death. Having covered a number of armed conflicts around the world, Antoine d’Agata recently travelled to Ukraine and Israel to document the unspeakable violence in the field.
