Domestic and emotional companions, subjects of scientific study, objects of fascination and wonder — animals have never ceased to appear in the viewfinder of photographers since the invention of the medium.

This book explores how their images have shaped the way we picture them and influenced how we regard them.
From Eadweard Muybridge's galloping horses to Walter Chandoha's expressive cats, from George Shiras's nocturnal deer to Elliott Erwitt's bulldogs, from Jean Painlevé's seahorses to Martin Parr's or Inge Morath's llamas, not to mention the poetic tableaux of Vasantha Yogananthan or Rinko Kawauchi, many artists have turned to animals as subjects.

Blending major works with anonymous images, the book charts a course structured around seven perspectives — anatomical, performative, affective, fascinated, ethical, plastic, and viral — inviting us to rethink, through 200 years of photography, the complex and sensitive relationships we hold with living beings.

250 photographs – 165 artists
