Can we nurture a spiritual connection online?

Antoine Martin spent over two years exploring the leading open-source camera website, where he found thousands of public–or poorly protected–webcams listed by topic transmitting continuous live feeds from all over the world. He focused on the category of ‘religion’ and, in particular, on the predominantly Christian church services streamed online.

The global pandemic saw exponential growth of virtual ceremonies, such as processions, funerals, anonymous worshippers and priests praying, followed and celebrated online. The visual artist compiled hundreds of pixelated screenshots of everyday scenes in several Catholic, Protestant, and Evangelical churches, to explore the ubiquity of remote surveillance and the possibilities for digitising divine presence.
